Message from HH the XIV Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso I am very happy to know that a monastery and school organized by the venerable Bakula Rinpoche will be opened shortly in Mongolia. I offer my prayers that the students and monks who enroll there will do well in their studies and be able to contribute to the restoration of Mongolia’s religious and cultural heritage, and that this in turn may be a source of peace and happiness for the Mongolian people. I have known Ven. Bakula Rinpoche for a very long time and have much appreciation for his dedication and contribution to the Buddha Dharma. -Dalai Lama

Pethub Stangey Choskorling Monastery Following the 1990 democratic changes in Mongolia which also brought religious freedom to its people, a wave of religious upsurge began in Mongolia. HH Kushok Bakula Rinpoche, himself a reincarnated lama and a Geshe Lharampa from Tibet’s Drepung Losaling Monastery was appointed India's Ambassador to Mongolia. Following collapse of communism within months of his arrival in the country, Rinpoche worked hard for Buddhist revival in Mongolia . Bakula Rinpoche traveled extensively to all parts of Mongolia and having experienced the utter devastation and erosion in Buddhist monastic traditions, he felt an urgent need to set up a monastery. In 1991, Bakula Rinpoche approached the Mongolian Government for a suitable piece of land for the proposed monastery. Governor of Ulaanbaatar Mr. L. Enebish not only agreed but also permitted Rinpoche to select the site. Breaking traditions, Rinpoche chose a tract of land in the city so that monastery becomes easily accessible to the people. H.H. the IX Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso laid the foundation of the Monastery on 18th September 1991. This Monastery was founded to restore and develop the glorious Buddhist traditions of Mongolia, which in turn may be a source of true happiness for its people. HE Mr. Krishan Kant, the Vice- President of India inaugurated the Monastery on 15th day of the 7th month of Earth Rabbit Year (26th AUGUST 1999). Among the those in attendance was Minister for Education and Culture, Government of Mongolia, Mr. T. Kawai, President, MOA International and a galazy of Buddhist leaders from various countries. The Monastery has at present 50 monks and several monk teachers from India. In order to ensure discipline among monks, it is essential that they live in a proper environment. It was a cherished wish of Bakula Rinpoche to have a proper residence facility for monks. Accordingly, a new residence block for monks was completed in 2006 and inaugurated by the HE Mr. N. Enkhbayar, President of Mongolia where all facilities are provided to the monks. Daily religious services and prayers are conducted at the monastery from 0900 to 1300 hrs. |
